The Transformative Power of Daily Affirmations
Every morning, before I start my day, I take a moment to connect with myself. I breathe in deeply, feeling the air fill my lungs, and then I begin:
“I am not bound by my past. I will live in the present while focusing on my growth for my future. I am deserving of success. I deserve to achieve my financial and my personal self-development goals. I am deserving because I am prepared to invest my time in myself. I am prepared to seek out and learn the skills that I currently lack. I am courageous. I will step outside of my comfort zone today.”
These are some of my daily affirmations, and as I repeat them, I visual them as vividly as possible and I allow myself to acknowledge that thoughts and desires, whether good or bad, manifest, and become real with repetition, belief and by taking action on them. While repeating my affirmations I also allow myself to feel the shift in my focus and my resolve increasing within me. Click here to watch: 20 Free Daily Affirmations to Boost Your Self Esteem
Why do daily affirmations work?
Daily affirmations may seem like simple phrases, but they are in fact, powerful tools that will reprogram our subconscious mind, when supported by repetition, belief, and by us taking action. Daily affirmations work by altering the way that we perceive ourselves and our capabilities. In my case I had a non-productive, self-defeating, abuse accepting, script running in my subconscious mind. It was formed during my childhood and reenforced over the course of my life by me, and by others who were willing to exploit this unconscious negative “truth” that I held about myself.
When I first encountered the concept of using daily affirmations, I was sceptical. How could repeating a few lines daily until I believed them, and by acting according to my new beliefs, change my life? Well, I discovered that it was because our physical brain structure, our thoughts and our beliefs, are all changeable and able to be reprogrammed. Although it was once believed that our brains stopped developing after the first few years of life and that only young brains were ‘plastic’ and able to form new neural connections, Click here to read more about the science behind Neuroplasticity. Modern neuroscience teaches us that our brains remain malleable and neuroplastic for all of our lives. So, by consistently engaging with positive affirmations, I was cultivating new neural pathways which promote self-love, confidence, and resilience. In essence, I am teaching my brain to prioritise positivity over negativity. Click here to watch: 20 Daily Affirmations for Personal Growth
If you can Change your thoughts, you can change your mind.
Afflictions such as self-doubt, anxiety, or feelings of inadequacy can trap any of us in a cycle of negativity and learned helplessness. I have found that my habit of reciting my daily affirmations before sleeping and upon waking, have served as a lifeline, pulling me up and giving me the strength to rewrite my internal dialogue. My daily affirmations pit my conscious mind against my subconscious beliefs, and foster a more empowering self-perception of myself and of my abilities. When I affirm, “I am worthy of success,” I disrupt the internal script that says otherwise. Initially, it felt uncomfortable, almost absurd and like I was lying to myself, but over time, I as I began to visualise my new truths, believe them and to act on them I allowed the “magic” to happen. Each time I declare these truths, I chip away at the doubts that threaten to overpower me.
I have found that the power of daily affirmations extends beyond my self-esteem; It has also helped me to cultivate resilience during challenging times. The facts are that life throws obstacles at us and that we cannot control everything that happens; but I have learnt that I can begin to control my responses. Repeating affirmations such as “I am resilient” or “I can overcome any challenge” has helped me to build a mental toolkit to navigate these trials; my mind now habitually looks for solutions rather than simply becoming overwhelmed. My affirmations infuse me with hope, and that hope becomes a catalyst for action.
